RV Propane Fill Stations Guide

Latest posts by Justin Caldwell (see all)

When you’re living the RV life, you need quite a bit of propane. Propane keeps your camper warm, lights the stove and the oven, and keeps your refrigerator running. You won’t want to be caught without propane, which is why you should always know where you can get refills to stay ahead of the game.

In this guide, we’ll review common nationwide propane filling stations, and then we’ll list locations by region so you can get propane when you need it most.

Ways to Fill Your Propane Tank

There are many different sizes of propane tanks. The most common are 20-pound and 30-pound tanks, but many people in permanent trailers will connect to much larger tanks ranging from 100 pounds to thousands of pounds.

Small propane tanks, like 20-pound tanks, can simply be exchanged for a new tank at a filling station, while 30-pound tanks are generally refilled rather than exchanged. However, they’re light enough that you can take them to get them filled.

Large permanent or semi-permanent tanks, like those over 100-200 pounds, much be refilled where they sit. They’re difficult to transport, and you need a propane delivery vehicle to come out and refill it for you.

Some propane filling stations specialize in a certain size of propane and don’t deal in delivery, while others only offer delivery. You’ll need to look for a propane filling station that works with the type of propane tank you need filled or exchanged.

Nationwide Propane Filling Stations

There are many names of propane companies you’ve probably seen before. They’re nationwide or chains that have multiple locations in several areas. These companies can help you get your propane tanks refilled when you need it.

Amerigas

Amerigas Propane

Amerigas has over 1,500 propane dealers across the country. The Amerigas website lists specific locations where you can get your propane tanks refilled or exchanged. This company not only fills national chains like Buc-ee’s in Texas and Sheetz in a few states but smaller stores as well.

Their website is easy to navigate when you’re searching for a location. You can search by cylinder refill, self-service filling, or tank exchanges, and it will list the nearby locations, including places like:

  • Costco
  • Walmart
  • U-Haul
  • Shell
  • Home Depot
  • Walgreens
  • CVS
  • Chevron

Ferrellgas

Ferrellgas Propane

Ferrellgas has hundreds of propane dealers across the country. The Ferrellgas website also includes specific locations where you can get your propane tanks refilled or exchanged.

Their website is easy to navigate when you’re searching for a location, and you can search by state, city, name of dealer, or ZIP code to find the nearest dealer. They also show you which dealers only offer refill services and where the exchange stations are located.

Some of the largest dealers are listed on their website, but they have many more listed in their dealer locator spreadsheet. Some of these filling stations include:

  • Shell
  • Walgreens
  • U-Haul
  • BP
  • TravelCenters of America
  • GM NOS Energy
  • Sheetz Gas & Go

Ace Hardware

acehardware propane tank

Ace Hardware’s website has a dealer locator for propane, but you’ll have to search by state. This locator is easy to use and shows you all the locations around where you live.

Many of these filling stations are just hardware stores that sell propane in various sizes, including 20-pound tanks and larger tanks. Some are local chains, while others are national brands.

If you’re looking for a hardware store near you that offers propane refills or exchanges, use the Ace Hardware locator to find it. You can also call your nearest Ace Hardware location directly to ask if they offer propane filling services.

Camping World

Camping World

Camping World has dozens of dealerships across the country, and their website allows you to search by state or ZIP code. You can also narrow down which ones offer propane filling services and the specific type of service they offer: refilling, exchanging, sale of tanks only, or setting up a new line.

The Camping World locator is easy to use and shows you where to get your propane filled. It includes some local chains that have a handful of locations, but also shows national chains like:

  • TravelCenters of America
  • Love’s Country Stores
  • Sheetz Gas & Go
  • U-Haul
  • Walgreens
  • Shell

Costco

Costco Propane

If you’re a Costco member, you can fill your propane tank at any Costco warehouse location. You need to bring your own cylinder, and the locations usually have an air hose available for you to check that it’s empty.

You’ll also see them listed on Camping World’s locator as self-service filling stations, but they’re open to anyone who has their own cylinder.

Crescent Gas & Oil Supply

This company was founded in 1960 and has been supplying propane to customers for over 50 years. They offer a large list of locations where you can get your propane filled, along with links to the dealer’s website or contact information. You can search by city/state, ZIP code, and location name.

Some of the locations include local dealers, but Crescent also includes large national chains like:

  • U-Haul
  • Walgreens
  • Love’s Country Stores
  • TravelCenters of America
  • Sheetz Gas & Go

If you’re anywhere in their service area and need your propane tank refilled or exchanged, Crescent is an option. They also offer large propane tanks to accommodate those who need more capacity.

U-Haul

RV on U-Haul propane station

U-Haul’s website includes a search function that allows you to find the nearest location for propane refills or exchanges. You can also call your local U-Haul center directly and ask if they offer propane filling services; some will fill tanks while others don’t.

If you’re looking for a refill station, make sure you check the right box. The drop-down list includes options for refilling propane tanks, exchanging tanks, full service filling stations that will fill new or used tanks, and self-service locations where you can swap your own propane tank.

When you select refilling or exchanging, it takes you to a different page with specific information about services available.

Shell

Shell is the biggest chain on this list, and they offer propane filling services in many states across the US. You only need to show your driver’s license, so leaving your tanks behind isn’t an issue. There are also other Shell locations that will set up a new line for you if needed.

TA

TravelCenters of America is one of the largest truck stop chains in the US, and they offer propane filling services at most locations. You only need to present your driver’s license or other ID, but they may ask you what size tank you have before they’ll fill it.

Some TravelCenters of America will only fill your tanks while others are set up for exchanges. The individual locations have their own policies in place, so call ahead to ask if you’re not sure which kind of service is available.

You can find the closest TravelCenters of America location on the website. You’ll need to search for your city or state, then narrow down your choices by selecting Propane Filling Station from the drop-down list.

Love’s Country Stores

Love's Country Stores

Love’s offers propane filling services at most locations, and you only need to show your driver’s license to prove you’re over 18 years old. The company states that they don’t refill bottles that are rusty or dented, which means it can be a good idea to check for those signs before you leave your RV.

You can find the closest location on Love’s website by entering your city, state, and ZIP code in the search field under Stores Locator. Select Propane Filling Station from the drop-down menu that appears to see a list of locations near you.

Walgreens

The Walgreens website allows you to search for locations by ZIP code or city/state. When available, select Propane Filling Station from the drop-down list and enter your ZIP code. You can also find a Walgreens location near you on Google Maps.

Not every Walgreens location fills propane tanks, so be sure to check with the location in your area before you go.

Tractor Supply

Tractor Supply Company offers propane filling services at a limited number of locations, and you’ll need to present a copy of your driver’s license.

You can find the closest Tractor Supply location on their website by searching for your city/state or ZIP code. You’ll need to select Propane Filling Station from the drop-down list to find the locations that offer this service.

Home Depot

Home Depot’s website allows you to search for locations by entering your city/state or ZIP code. Select Propane Filling Station from the drop-down list next to Locate.

You’ll need to have your driver’s license on hand, and it can take up to two hours to fill a 100-pound tank at some locations. You can search for locations on Google Maps, too.

Menards

Propane Refilling

Menards offers propane filling services at most locations, but you’ll need to present your driver’s license. The company states that they may refuse to fill tanks with dents or rust, so it’s best to inspect your bottle before bringing it in.

You can find the closest Menards on its website by entering your city/state or ZIP code under Find a Store. Select Propane Filling Station from the drop-down list to see if the location near you will fill your tank.

Some Menards locations only refill tanks while others offer exchanges, so call ahead before you go to check their policies.

How Propane Exchanges Work

The most common refill size is 20 pounds. If you have a 20-pound tank, you can refill it at many different locations, and in some locations, the store doesn’t even need to be open. You simply insert your payment, return your old tank, and it dispenses a new one.

Pros of Exchanging

  • Cheaper than buying a new tank
  • Takes less time than waiting on a refill
  • New tanks are always in good shape

Cons of Exchanging

  • No credit for remaining propane in old tank

How to Find Propane Refills and Exchanges

There’s an app for that. Actually, there are several. It’s easy enough to Google where the closest propane filling station is, but if you’re constantly on the move, downloading an app to your phone is much more efficient.

AllStays

allstays app location

AllStays offers a free app that can help you find campgrounds, RV parks, and propane filling stations across the United States. According to its website, it loads more than 10,000 locations.

Unfortunately, this app is only available for iPhone users and the filter can be tricky to figure out.

RVParky

RVParky offers a free Android app that allows you to search for RV parks by category—for example, full hookups or pet-friendly. You can also save your favorite locations and see what other campers have said about different parks.

There’s a filter specifically for propane, so no matter where you are, you can find the most convenient location for refills.

RV Share

This Android app allows you to search for campgrounds, RV parks, and propane filling stations by location or category. You can also see what other people have to say about different locations and save your favorite places.

Be sure to check the map before you download any apps—the more popular ones usually find all your nearby locations, but if you’re in a spotty area, your phone might not be able to find the closest propane filling station.

Alternative Fuel Station Locator

Alternative Fuel Station Locator

If you’re not in the market for a new app, try Alternative Fuel Station Locator. This website is conveniently organized by state—simply enter your ZIP code or select it from the drop-down list and search away!

There’s no download necessary, so this site works well on desktop computers and mobile devices. It also provides more information about each location than most apps, including the hours of operation and whether or not you’ll need to enter your license plate number.

If you have a certain station in mind, Alternative Fuel Station Locator will show you the distance from your location.

Wherever You Park Your RV

This website offers more information on propane filling stations across the country. Simply enter your zip code or select it from the drop-down list, choose your state, and click Search.

Or you can head straight to its propane section. Here, you’ll find a map of the United States with all of the filling stations marked. If you’re having trouble finding one in particular, try using Google.
